The Yonkers School District will restructure its
payroll methodology after an audit found the district responsible for five deficiencies in its financial management. The Journal News reports that Bonadio & Co. uncovered five issues in the district's financial reporting and a sixth involving the lack of certification in payrolls involving federal funds.
Bonadio & Co. reported unsatisfactory payroll processing at the district, including "inadequate" accounting and poor management in payroll distribution. According to The Journal News, the auditor discovered the school does not have the employees "with proper experience and competence to oversee authorization and reporting of the school district's financial transactions."
The district was quick to answer the accusations, stating it would reshuffle its finance department and alter methods within its payroll department to halt unauthorized charges, while doing a better job of creating quarterly reports.
Staff members lacking enough knowledge to handle the
payroll process is a good example of the need for payroll software that can handle calculations and management. The news source states the district faces a $48 million budget gap for the 2010-2011 school year. Payroll processing software could help ease that pain by eliminating much of the district's human error.
