Wisconsin congressman Jon Richards, D-Milwaukee, plans to propose a bill that would allocate $500,000 for overtime payments for Milwaukee police officers. Richards, who is a member of the congressional Joint Finance Committee, announced on Aug. 13 that he plans to introduce the bill "within the next week." The legislation, which is currently being drafted, will aim to compensate workers for extra time and attendance.
Richards decided to pursue the legislation after a week-and-a-half period in August during which there were more than 24 shootings. The Milwaukee Police Department handled the shooting cases - Richards said he is proposing the funds as a way to help the MPD prevent and respond to shootings and other incidents throughout the city.
The legislation would provide $500,000 in government funds to Milwaukee, so long as Wisconsin state officials agree to match the sum.
"Milwaukee is willing to step up to the plate and do its part to pay for increased policing," Richards said. "I am proposing that the state meet us half way and continue supporting Milwaukee."
The state has previously granted funds to the police department to reduce crime, but recently cut spending for several police departments across the state during budget meetings.
