Walking programs result in employee and employer benefits

It may be hard to believe, but in a country with a national unemployment rate tip-toeing around 9 percent, employee recruiting can pose a challenge to human resources and owners.

As a result, businesses are investing more in benefits programs that promote not only productivity but work-life balance and improved health. A recent article in Industry Week discussed the benefits of adding a walking program to your office.

Lisa Rousseau writes for the source that recent surveys measuring the impact of walking programs showed that participants experienced measurable outcomes, improved wellness culture and a heightened sense of fun.

"The benefits of these walking programs work both ways. Employees can engage in some fun at the workplace while getting into the exercise habit," Rousseau writes. "Employers can save money and increase productivity while showing that they value the health and wellbeing of their employees. It's a win-win situation."

Insurance companies are jumping on board the new wellness trend as well. The Denver Post reports that UnitedHealth is now selling plans that give workers $600 discounts if they agree to weight, blood pressure and other screenings, and continue to meet targeted levels.
