A former nurse at Virginia's Lynchburg General Hospital was recently charged with embezzlement after allegedly stealing more than $46,000 from the healthcare provider's parent organization, according to WSLS.
A payroll report indicated that Tracey Heisler fraudulently billed Centra Health for 689 hours over a six-month period.
Centra Human Resources Director Lauralyn Martin testified that although Heisler was occasionally expected to work at an hourly rate as a staff nurse, her primary job was as a salaried manager, making the amount of overtime she claimed to have accrued impossible. According to Martin, the deception had gone unnoticed for so long because Heisler had been permitted to act as her own manager when approving the overtime hours.
Centra Health no longer permits salaried managers to earn hourly wages while working for the company in another position, and is also analyzing other internal audit policies, the news source reported.
Elsewhere in healthcare, a former payroll consultant for the Massachusetts-based Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center was recently indicted for allegedly embezzling $750,000 over a period of six years, according to the Boston Globe.
