The union representing many of Bexar County, Texas' law enforcement officials recently filed suit against the county over payroll deductions - specifically, members' money that is transferred to the union's political action committee, the San Antonio Express-News reports.
According to a recent court filing by the Deputy Sheriff's Association of Bexar County quoted by the news source, the county is accused of making "untrue allegations" about the political donation collection process.
County administrators claimed that members who elected to make voluntary contributions to the political action committee had extra money deducted from their paychecks. The news source reports that this is the equivalent of the county illegally holding political funds. However, the union argues that the payments are extra membership dues and the money is not sent to the PAC account until after it is transferred from the county, removing the county from any responsibility or involvement.
Earlier this year, there was controversy over a law banning the deduction of union dues from payroll in several southern states, including Alabama and Florida. The Florida bill - passed in March - requires unions to obtain an annual written authorization from their members before using dues for a political union activity.
