Union members in Florida are expressing outrage at a member of the state House of Representatives for what they claim are contradictory statements, following the introduction of a bill that would limit union payroll processing.
WFTV-TV reports that state Representative Chris Dorworth is supporting a bill that would eliminate the ability of unions to automatically deduct union dues from members' paychecks. Instead, union members would have to reach a unanimous vote before dues money could go toward political activity. Union members have directed their ire at Dorworth because he accepted financial support from unions during the last election cycle.
According to WFTV, Dorworth received $7,000 from unions during his 2010 campaign. Steve Clelland of the Orlando Professional Firefighters Union told WFTV that the bill is representative of unfair and hypocritical politics that have gripped the state.
The Florida Independent reports that the bill cleared the Florida House Appropriations Committee by a 14-10 vote. Yet, critics of the bill state that Dorworth's attempts, which are being mirrored in the state Senate, are the continuation of practices by state governments throughout the country to limit union influence in the political sphere.
