Two Madison County, Ga., employees have been suspended for assisting the sheriff in a time-card discrepancy investigation. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, the sheriff's inspection looked into other county workers' time and attendance records.
The two women were suspended from work by their boss Anthony Dove, chairman of the County Board of Commissioners, because he felt they went behind his back in helping with the investigation
The human resources director was the first employee suspended because she called the sheriff after noticing possible errors on time cards. The county clerk provided the necessary records.
Sheriff Kip Thomas told Dove he overreacted. Dove recently took responsibility for the conflict and asked the commission to take away his disciplinary responsibilities, as reported by Madison Journal TODAY.
Both suspended Madison County employees stand by their actions. "I did call and ask [the sheriff's office] to view certain dates and I have been able to verify that multiple records have been falsified," Donna Sisk, the HR director, said.
In the aftermath of these conflicts, the county is looking into more reliable employee tracking systems, such as time clocks.
"I brought it up two years ago about time clocks," Commissioner Jim Escoe told the Athens Banner-Herald. "I've never been associated with a business where people didn't have a time clock."
