Town questions worker's excessive overtime

A Tonawanda, New York, employee recently came under scrutiny after the town's time and attendance records revealed excessive overtime compensation, according to the Buffalo News.

Park maintenance chief Marvin Hudson took home $17,000 in overtime employee attendance pay last year - the highest of any workers in the town's highway, sewer or water departments - and is on pace to exceed that total in 2011. In August alone, he billed the town for $3,000 in time-and-a-half pay, and has taken home more than $15,000 this year.

Town councilman Daniel Crangle, the chairman of the Youth, Parks and Recreation Committee that employs Hudson, told the news source that an investigation has been launched.

"We're looking at overtime pay … townwide," he said. "If there's a way to consolidate or save money, we're going to do it."

Overtime is currently a big issue for the state of New York as the Occupy Wall Street protests near the two-month mark. According to the Independent Budget Office, the first month of the demonstrations racked up $3.4 million in overtime for the New York Police Department.
