With the mobile technology that is increasingly available to the workforce, employers are often faced with the difficult task of managing a large number of remote staff members. However, since mobile time and attendance apps equipped with GPS keep track of when and where employees are, it is easier than ever before to deploy workers outside of an office setting. This situation may call for a different supervisory strategy than many seasoned managers are accustomed to.
For one, overseeing a mobile workforce means letting go of the tendency to micromanage. It simply isn't possible to look over shoulders. Instead, focusing on the big picture - whether or not larger goals are being met - will allow managers to relinquish some of their immediate control over day-to-day operations.
In an interview with Inc Magazine, Chris Sugai, CEO of Niner Bikes, provides some tips he learned from managing upwards of 30 employees who rarely, if ever set foot inside the company's home office in Fort Collins, Colo. He suggests that business owners trust their employees to do what needs to be done, but also do frequent reviews.
"I think when you give people that power, they don't abuse it," Sugai says.
Employing remote workers is a necessity for some companies. Utilizing time and attendance mobile apps, as well as scheduling frequent reviews make it easy to manage employees from a distance.
