The Wage and Hour Division, a branch of the U.S Department of Labor (DOL), is launching an initiative to crack down on labor law violations in the Texas motel and hotel industry. Recent investigations by the DOL have revealed that many companies are violating overtime and minimum wage laws established by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
"These types of businesses employ large numbers of low-wage and vulnerable workers who are less likely to step forward and complain when subjected to wage violations," said regional administrator for the Wage and Hour Division in the Southwest Cynthia Watson.
Dallas' District Office conducted investigations in 2011 that revealed employers were misclassifying employees, paying housekeepers per room instead of following minimum wage standards, failing to accurately track hours worked when split between various site locations and paying workers standard pay rates for overtime
employee attendance.
To prevent labor law violations, the Wage and Hour Division will make surprise visits to investigate payroll and recordkeeping practices at hotels and motels in the state. Businesses can avoid penalties and for non-compliance by supplying evidence of accurate compensation for employee time and attendance.
