Following an audit by the United States Department of Labor, Texas-based Valley Baptist Medical Center recently sent out checks to compensate employees for unpaid overtime and skipped meal breaks, KRGV-TV reports.
In a statement, the hospital acknowledged shortcomings in its payroll process.
"The first issue was the calculation of overtime as processed by our information systems for some employees," the statement read. "The second issue was the determination of skipped meals during work hours. Both of these issues have been corrected, going forward. "
VBMC, which has two locations in the south Texas cities of Brownsville and Harlingen, was in the news last month for a more positive reason. The two hospitals exceeded a goal set by a U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services pilot project intended to reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions by 2 percent within 30 days of discharge.
The Harlingen campus achieved a readmission reduction rate of 4.2 percent, and the Brownsville campus cut down by 2.8 percent, the Brownsville Herald reports.
