The city of Plano, Texas, recently approved a settlement in a time and attendance lawsuit involving several public works employees, according to the Louisville Leader.
Six workers filed suit against the city to seek unpaid overtime wages for
employee attendance they say routinely exceeded 40 hours per week. They also claimed the city violated the meal and break provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) by forcing them to work through through lunch periods and not paying them for meal breaks.
If the settlement is approved, the named plaintiffs will be paid more than $554,000 in compensation - along with, potentially, other unnamed employees of the city's public works department.
In a statement quoted by the news source, the city noted that settling the claim would allow it to "move forward with providing its services to the public while avoiding further expenses associated with continued litigation."
Elsewhere in the state, East Texas-based Great Western Financial Services bank was sued by a former employee last month for violating the FLSA's overtime provisions, according to the Southeast Texas Record. The class action lawsuit alleges that the bank routinely required loan officers to work overtime without compensating them at a time-and-a-half rate.
