Singapore-based electronic manufacturing services company Flextronics Corporation is being sued by a Providence, Rhode Island, attorney for allegedly withholding overtime employee attendance pay for three workers, according to WRNI-FM.
The lawsuit claims that the workers, who provided technical support at Verizon stores in the state until June, were wrongly exempted from time and attendance regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
"Management employees can generally hire and fire people unilaterally, sign contracts for their employer," the plaintiffs' attorney, John Longo, told the news source. "In the case of the Flextronics field team supervisors, basically they had no authority other than to assign people to slots."
The case has the potential to grow into a class action suit involving up to 700 Flextronics supervisors from around the country. Longo said he is planning to file a second suit on behalf of five Massachusetts workers.
Verizon faced similar overtime quandaries of its own last month when its California employees filed suit over being allegedly misclassified by the company in order to reduce overtime costs.
