Tacoma City Council discusses paid sick leave ordinance

During a town hall meeting in Tacoma, Wash., small-business owners came together to discuss whether to implement a paid sick leave policy for the city. According to King 5 News, a coalition of more than 30 community groups, unions and businesses have united under The Healthy Tacoma initiative.

The collaboration between different interested enterprises aims to push a proposed city ordinance into law that would make it mandatory for employers to pay workers during sick leave. Terry Hayes, employee of Dowd BBQ, explained the law would make workers feel more secure in their positions as well as valued for their services. The group explained 41 percent of workers in Tacoma don't have access to paid sick leave, resulting a growing number of individuals who are forced to work through their infirmities.

Under the proposed ordinance, workers would be able to accrue sick time, depending on the size of the company, according to the law firm of Barran Liebman. For employers with 10 or fewer workers, their employees would be able to earn one hour of paid time off for health-related reasons for every 30 hours worked. However, staff would be restricted to using fewer than 40 hours per calendar year for sick leave.
