Survey: 69 percent of small businesses not planning to hire within next year

A recently released Small Business Authority survey indicates that more than two-thirds of small businesses do not anticipate engaging in employee recruiting over the next 12 months.

One-half of the approximately 1,100 respondents to the monthly SB Authority Market Sentiment Survey reported having a pessimistic outlook on the overall business environment, and 17.5 percent said their feelings on the topic were neutral.

Some reported raising prices over the past year in order to combat inflationary pressures and mitigate the reduction of their profit margins. The utilization of technology such as cloud computing was identified as the only segment of business allowing them to improve their cash flows.

"It is the only area where internal costs to run one's business can be reduced as well as produce efficiencies in performance and production of one's labor pool," said Small Business Authority president and CEO Barry Sloane. "Utilizing the cloud environment for computing and operating one's business is far superior in costs, security and efficiency."

The drop in share prices that occurred after Standard & Poor's downgraded the nation's credit rating is thought to have contributed to the hiring slowdown, according to Reuters.
