Five individuals who provided security at a major golf tournament held in August in Rochester, N.Y., are suing their employer for overtime pay, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. The Brooklyn firm provided additional security at the event, which drew thousands of golf fans to Oak Hill Country Club.
The employees, who worked from Aug. 2 to Aug. 21 allegedly clocked an excess of 40 hours each work week. However, they were not compensated with the time-and-a-half pay required by federal law. In addition, the workers claim they put in 10-hour shifts on several occasions. The lawsuit claims that the company failed to compensate at least 100 other workers for overtime.
The lawsuit follows another incident with the security firm, in which more than 100 temporary employees hired by the company did not receive their payment in a timely manner, according to YNN Rochester. The payment situation was complicated by the fact that the business itself had been hired by a separate organization, which the Brooklyn firm deemed responsible for the failure to pay the workers promptly.
Even in situations where temporary employees are brought in, companies should take care to log employee time using time and attendance software. If overtime is accrued, it is advisable that supervisors compensate workers in a timely manner to avoid both bad press and lawsuits.
