The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is projected to spend more than $56 million compensating overtime employee attendance this year - nearly $25 million over its original budget, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
The biggest contributor to extra time and attendance was repairs, with $3.5 million worth of overtime being accrued by maintenance workers who fixed vehicle breakdowns and infrastructure issues related to the crumbling conditions of tracks and stations. Other overtime-earners included transit scheduling, with operators logging extra hours, and extra staffing for special events such as sports games, festivals and parades.
"We're certainly going to have to evaluate our overtime levels during the next budget cycle," said agency spokesman Paul Rose, as quoted by the news source. He noted that the current $31.9 million budget is clearly insufficient and failed to take into account all necessary accommodations.
In January, the agency announced that it was considering increasing parking citation revenue to offset the budget deficit, according to a separate Examiner article.
