Retailers offer incentives for holiday workers

As more stores plan to remain open on Thanksgiving Day, employers are offering incentives to staff who spend the holiday working.

Macy's will be opening its doors on the holiday for the first time. In an interview with NBC News, vice president of corporate communications and external affairs Jim Sluzewski said employees have been positive about the change. Because all workers will receive time and a half pay for any shift that day, nearly all of the shifts were voluntarily filled.

Walmart will remain open as well, feeding a traditional turkey dinner to all employees scheduled that day, in addition to 25 percent off during a future shopping trip and an extra day's worth of pay. That additional pay will be calculated by averaging an employee's hours from the two weeks prior to Thanksgiving.

For Walmart, Thanksgiving this year is an extension of Black Friday, which Duncan Mac Naughton, Walmart's chief merchandising and marketing officer, called the "Super Bowl of retail" in an interview with The Plain Dealer.

A number of other retailers will offer incentives for employees to work on Thanksgiving this year. In addition to time and a half pay, Toys R Us workers will also receive meals and be permitted to wear jeans and sneakers that day.

Time and attendance software can help employers log hours to ensure workers get proper holiday compensation.
