A former postal union officer from Hawthorne, New Jersey, accused stealing more than $780,000 from the union's payroll account was recently sentenced for the crime, according to The Record.
John McGovern, who served as secretary-treasurer of the North Jersey Area Local 190 of the American Postal Workers International Union, admitted conspiring with the chapter's former president, Gary Weightman, to execute the embezzlement. The pair issued unauthorized salary payments to themselves, and used funds from its operation account for personal expenses including taking gambling trips to Atlantic City, the newspaper reports.
"A message has to go out that if you embezzle significant amounts of money from a union, you will pay with a loss of your freedom," U.S. District Judge Faith S. Hochberg told McGovern, according to the news source.
Hochberg ordered McGovern to pay $783,931 in restitution to the union. He will spend 20 months in federal prison.
A payroll fraud scandal also recently erupted in neighboring New York after the project manager for New York City's time and attendance software project, CityTime, was fired by the company in charge of the project. Gerald Denault is accused of misrepresenting his hours to collect nearly $2.5 million.
