Although the Philadelphia City Council and the mayor both signed off on legislation to authorize automatic payroll deductions for the Fraternal Order of Police's political action committee five years ago, the city's charter is at odds with the practice, Newsworks reports. Consequently, it was never implemented.
Now, the local branch of the union is suing the city in an effort to mandate the collection of funds from members' paychecks.
According to Tom Jennings - the attorney representing the union - the mandatory deductions are necessary to keep FOP running smoothly. Without them, its only source of income from members is contributions from active officers, which often prove insufficient.
"In the real world in which we live, in order to express your opinion, it costs money, and you need a constant flow of income," said Jennings, quoted by the news source.
According to its website, FOP is the largest union of law enforcement officials in the world and has more than 325,000 members.
