A recently released list of the top 50 municipal wage-earners in Danvers, Massachusetts, indicates that police overtime increased in 2010, according to the Salem News. Town manager Wayne Marquis said the police department would go over its budgeted $815,000 for extra hours worked this fiscal year.
"Efforts are ongoing to save money in other areas of the police budget, which we expect to use to offset some of these costs," Marquis said, as reported by the news source. "Even with these steps, we will likely need a transfer in May from other departments to offset the full amount expected."
Police chief Neil Ouellette blamed the rise on accidents and assaults that resulted in injuries and sick time, as well as the loss of two officers due to budget cuts in 2009. Last year, officers earned an average of $16,483 in overtime, although one - Patrolman Robert Santo - accrued more than $42,000. Santo's total wages for 2010 were $168,873 - only about $2,000 less than Marquis'.
The Guam Police Department is also blaming a lack of officers and funding for its failure to pay more than $200,000 in overtime to its employees, according to the Pacific News Center. The department is being fined $49,500 by the Department of Labor.
