Police chief's overtime eligibility questioned

The police chief of Elmwood Park, New Jersey, is being investigated for possible time and attendance compensation violations after it was revealed that he took home more than $21,000 in overtime pay this year, according to the North Jersey Record.

A Record investigation revealed that Donald Ingrasselino's contract does not provide for overtime employee attendance. However, his role in drunken-driving enforcement operations garnered him a hefty payout this year, in addition to $8,321 last year.

At a recent council meeting, Ingrasselino claimed he accrued the overtime by making sure DWI roadblocks were in the correct place and the proper procedures were being followed.

"As we understand it, labor laws do not entitle elected officials and managers to overtime compensation," said Department of Community Affairs spokeswoman Lisa Ryan, as quoted by the news source.

Overtime was an issue in another part of New Jersey last month after payouts to the mayor of Paterson and three other high-ranking officials were questioned, according to the news source. Mayor Jeffery Jones was given $6,114 and his business administrator, chief of staff and technology director received $5,623, $4,446 and $4,290, respectively, for the hours they spent responding to devastation caused by Hurricane Irene.
