The Pittsburgh police are investigating Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's former bodyguard, Fred Crawford, for possible falsification of overtime on his time and attendance report while in the Mayor's employ. Pittsburgh Police Chief Regina McDonald is asking for the Office of Municipal Investigations to look into the possible time sheet errors. At this point, it is unclear whether it is the Mayor or Crawford himself who is responsible for the discrepancies in the time and attendance report.
Throughout Crawford's employment, there were several dates on which two time cards were submitted. For example, one time card submitted by Crawford stated he put in more than 15 hours of overtime, while another submitted that same day stated he worked 13 overtime hours, making it look as though Crawford had been paid for as much as 28 and a half hours of overtime for one day.
Since Fred Crawford retired in September of 2011, the investigation is raising questions as to why no one noticed the discrepancies earlier. In an interview with The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Robert Stewart, Crawford's attorney, questioned whether OMI has any jurisdiction over a retired cop. Stewart also said the investigation would show that the mayor used Crawford as a designated driver while he went out to bars.
As reported by The Associated Press, Chief McDonald stated she will ask OMI to look into overtime slips submitted by all of Mayor Ravenstahl's bodyguards.
