Phoenix manufacturer fails to compensate workers for overtime work

An investigation into the time and attendance policy of a Phoenix military and protective gear manufacturer uncovered overtime violations. Investigators from the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division Phoenix District Office found that 79 current and former employees at Tyr Tactical had not received fair payment for overtime work based on standards established by the Fair Labor Standards Act, resulting in a payout of more than $124,000, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

Eric Murray, director of the Phoenix District Office, explained the workers routinely worked in excess of 60 hours per week but were never compensated at a rate of time and a half their normal wages. Murray also emphasized the importance of quick compliance with FLSA standards and applauded the company for agreeing to pay the employees back wages for the discrepancy.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse for not following federal regulations and companies have several resources available to ensure they are not liable for any workplace infractions. Businesses that implement biometric time clocks can more easily verify the hours that employees have worked and are able to remunerate them according to the law.
