Payroll system blamed for Arizona county's alleged inappropriate spending

An outdated payroll system is being blamed for circumstances resulting in the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio being accused of inappropriately spending almost $100 million of funds for two jails and other law enforcement operations over the past eight years.

County officials say that the sheriff's office used a portion of the money to fund a public corruption squad that brought unsuccessful criminal cases against two county officials and a judge. Arpaio, who is known for his efforts against illegal immigration, also allegedly spent some of it on immigration patrols.

However, Interim Chief Deputy Sheriff Jerry Sheridan says the mistake was caused by an outdated payroll system that failed to track when jail officers were transferred to regular patrol.

A clerical error was also blamed for the district of Morrill, Nebraska's failure to submit payroll taxes for the first three quarters of 2010, according to the Lincoln Journal Star.

The Morrill school board accepted the resignation of superintendent Steve Osborn following the filing of a $169,000 tax lien by the Internal Revenue Service over the unpaid payroll taxes.
