Despite the economic downturn, recently released payroll records from states across the nation indicate that some public service workers don't appear to be feeling the pinch.
For instance, trash collectors in New York City reportedly receive an annual salary of $67,000, according to Investopedia. Although this figure is lower in other areas of the country, the average national salary for the profession is still approximately $43,000 before benefits, bonuses and overtime - a figure that is $2,000 higher than the national average salary for all of the country's workers.
Similarly surprising statistics can be found in data related to the average salaries of toll booth operators and public transit attendants across the country, who earn $45,000 and $62,000, respectively.
Figures released by the state of California earlier this month caused a furore when it was revealed that the 10 highest-paid state employees earned more than $500,000 each last year - a combined total of $6.2 million, according to Bloomberg. Seven of the employees were prison doctors or dentists.
