Overtime pay costs Illinois tollway

Illinois toll workers have been exploiting payroll policies to inflate wages with overtime pay. Last year, Illinois Tollway system employees racked up $4 million for overtime employee attendance.

The Chicago Tribune analyzed tollway pay data and found that some employees were able to boost their base pay 21 to 50 percent with the extra wages. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) employers must pay employees one-and-a-half times the regular pay rate for any hours worked in excess of the standard 40-hour workweek.

Excessive overtime costs indicate workers are taking advantage of the system. Last year, 42 employees pocked more than $10,000 in extra wages - 20 of them earned that much two years in a row.

Chicago's tollway system has taken steps in the past few years to bring down high overage payouts, the Tribune reports. In 2008, overtime costs peaked at $5.1 million and have since dropped 25 percent. Employers can keep their payroll on budget and avoid paying workers steep wages by enforcing attendance policies. Installing a timeclock in employee break rooms can help companies record accurate totals for each staff member.
