A time and attendance dispute has erupted in the city of Tyler, Texas, after an employee of the Hospice of East Texas filed suit over unpaid overtime wages, the Southeast Texas Record reports.
Judy Weedman sued the healthcare provider on behalf of herself and other workers. She claimed that the company violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by repeatedly and consistently denying its employees extra pay for overtime they had accrued while carrying out necessary duties.
Overtime has also been the subject of an ongoing debate between members of the Bermuda Industrial Union and the territory's government, according to the Royal Gazette.
In response to the government's propositions for conserving funding in the wake of the economic downturn, more than 80 percent of the union's members agreed to sacrifice overtime pay rates for regular ones, provided they do not have to pay payroll tax on the additional hours.
The measure was proposed as an alternative to cutting jobs.
