When it comes to
employee recruiting, the attributes of older workers are often more attractive to companies.
Carl van Horn, director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers' Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, tells ABC News that workers in their 40s and 50s tend to be more reliable and have a better work ethic in comparison to younger counterparts.
Generally, older professionals wouldn't be in the market for temporary employment during the holiday season. However, due to the current state of the economy, many are out of work and unable to find jobs in their fields.
"People living off their 401(k)s see the balance drop and realize they have to do something," Bill Coleman, vice president of research for RetirementJobs.com, told the news source. "A little supplemental income is exactly what they need."
National Retail Federation statistics estimate retailers will hire between 480,000 and 500,000 temporary workers this holiday season. Some companies vet temporary employees and offer full-time positions to high achievers.
