Ohio police officer violates overtime policy

A Columbus, Ohio police lieutenant will likely be fired after falsifying time and attendance reports for overtime pay. Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs recommended to Public Safety Director Mitchell Brown that Lt. Troy Casner be removed from the force after failing to follow police department protocol in reporting overtime records.

Sgt. Rich Weiner, a police division spokesman, told The Columbus Dispatch that the police chief believes Casner should receive a 240-hour suspension, have his rank demoted to officer and ultimately be terminated. The lieutenant has been accused of dishonest behavior when he misreported information on overtime documents nine times in August and September 2012, and failing to comply with official policy when he neglected to hand over his overtime documents to the commander of the narcotics division, the department in which Casner is employed.

He also was found guilty of a laundry list of infractions, according to an internal investigation. He had demonstrated inattention to duty after performing errands and vacating the premises during two narcotics operations while on the job, violated division directives and provided an additional, falsified overtime slip. The next step in the process will be a hearing with Safety Director Brown later this year.
