Ohio jail faces low staffing levels

Time and attendance software is a key investment for all organizations, but especially those that may be understaffed and encounter scheduling issues. When a private company or public agency is short on workers, their existing employees may need to pick up the slack, a situation that can result in time attendance violations or other issues in the workplace.

Ohio's Summit County Jail has found itself understaffed in recent months, a situation that has posed significant problems for the facility. The Akron Beacon Journal reported the county paid out $180,765 in overtime in 2011. This number leaped to more than $313,000 last year, and as of Sept. 19 of 2013, the amount had climbed to more than $277,500.

The lack of available workers can result in dangerous conditions for employees. According to The Beacon Journal, one employee reported being attacked by an inmate and because of the staff shortage, it was several minutes before he was rescued by co-workers.

Without more employees, Summit County Jail could face more instances like this, in which workers are put at risk. During times when available resources are limited, timekeeping software is key for organizations to ensure their employees are compensated for their hard work.
