The California Highway Patrol (CHP) paid patrolmen an additional $166,000 in wages for their overtime
employee attendance during last month's Occupy demonstration. The protest and rally were held at the state Capitol in protest of higher education budget cuts.
There were thousands of students, teachers and activists at the March 5 protest. The demonstration was organized by the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, California State Student Association and the University of California Student Association.
To monitor the protest, the CHP brought in an additional 288 uniformed officers. The department reported that in all, there were 367 officers patrolling the scene throughout the day. In addition to the overtime wages, the CHP paid approximately $6,000 to cover the travel expenses of Bay Area and Central Valley officers. CHP communications director said the Capitol Protection Services unit made the request for extra staffing based on crowd estimates, event permits and intelligence about the plans.
For the rest of the year, the CHP might have to carefully monitor officers' time and attendance to avoid racking up an even bigger overtime bill. They could invest in an updated time and attendance system that will notify the payroll department when officers are violating overtime policies.
