NY agencies will spend record amount on overtime in 2013

State agencies in New York have spent more than $462 million in overtime pay in the first 9 months of the year. At this time last year, overtime spending was $65 million, reported the Associated Press.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said overtime spending could reach $600 million this year.

"Reliance on overtime is getting to be an expensive habit," DiNapoli stated in an interview with the press.

The comptroller urges state agencies to maintain better control of excessive overtime spending by carefully monitoring employee hours, according to Democrat and Chronicle, a Rochester, NY newspaper.

Four agencies in particular accounted for 70 percent of the total overtime spending:

  • The Department of Corrections spent $121.9 million
  • The Department of Transportation was responsible for $36 million
  • The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities spent $95.3 million
  • The Office of Mental Health accounted for $71.7 million.

The overtime may be a result of limited staffing. The state has reduced hiring in the last few years. Since 2008, the number of positions has decreased by 14 percent - a total of 18,802 jobs.

For enterprises that need to decrease the amount of budget spent on overtime pay, attendance software is a vital tool for monitoring employee time.
