Last month, employee attendance policies in the city of Paterson, New Jersey, were called into question after four officials received overtime checks.
Mayor Jeffery Jones and his business administrator, chief of staff and technology director were awarded more than $50,000 for extra work during Hurricane Irene. However, as salaried employees, they are usually exempt from such time and attendance allowances.
The city council recently refused to delay a hearing about the payouts until the end of the month, denying the officials' request for more time to gather payroll records. Jones refused to testify and stormed out of the courtroom, telling reporters that the proceeding was a "kangaroo court."
"The mayor didn't just walk out on the City Council - he walked out on the people of Paterson," Councilman Kenneth Morris Jr. told the North Jersey Record. The council is currently considering charging the mayor with contempt of court.
According to a separate article by the news source, Jones has not cashed the check and is keeping it in his office.
