State Senator Robert Wirch has proposed a new bill in Wisconsin to ensure employers establish proper pay before hiring a worker. The bill hopes to have all companies disclose working conditions and pay for every employee as they start work and every year following their first date of employment, according to The Journal Times. Workers are entitled to minimum wage as well as promised wages, and the law proposal is expected to bring about enhanced penalties for employers who do not stick to their word.
Wage theft is unfortunately running rampant in the country as more workers are being underpaid for their time and attendance. Record keeping can be made easy with the right technology and services, such as a biometric time clock. But companies also need to make sure they have the proper record keeping processes from day one.
Other laws are already in effect in other U.S. states to help ensure employees are paid properly, and the Wirch bill is along the lines other local governments are enforcing for their residents. While it's estimated roughly 10 percent of employers are violating the Fair Labor Standards Act, the bill would help protect workers' rights for the 10 percent of companies that may not adhere to the rules.
