According to The Daily Item, Lynn Fire Department in Massachusetts - which employs 165 firefighters - has reported that it awarded more than $1.8 million in overtime and $26,779 in details last year, and 20 firefighters earned more than $100,000.
"We went from a city of 80,000 to 90,000, and I'm sure the numbers are actually near 100,000 because people don't do the census," Ward Three city councilor Darren Cyr told the news source. "In order to keep everyone safe, we need police and fire out there."
The fire department's overtime and detail figures are not as high as those for the city's police department, which fire chief Dennis Carmody says is unsurprising considering that police officers do more details.
"You have to look at the number of hours they're putting in - not seeing their families and putting their lives on the line," added Cyr.
Last year, police officers in nearby Salem, Massachusetts earned an average of $16,483 in overtime, although one - Patrolman Robert Santo - accrued more than $42,000, according to the Salem News.
