Employees of the Maine Turnpike Authority received some of the largest pay increases anywhere in the state over the last 12 years, according to a recent report from Maine Heritage Policy Center.
The organization found that the 470-employee MTA enjoyed a 72 percent increase in
payroll across the board over the last 12 years. The group also reports that as many as 75 employees earned at least $80,000 in 2010. The increase in MTA payrolls is significantly more than the private sector, where the average payroll has increased only 46 percent during the same time period.
"It is almost inconceivable to think that our toll dollars are funding such massive increases in pay," Sam Adolphsen, director of the Maine Heritage Policy Center's Center for Open Government, told the Associated Press.
However, the charge of unnecessary pay spikes has drawn the ire of the MTA whose spokesman Scott Tompkins said the data was erroneous. Tompkins states that only 10 employees earned more than $80,000 last year and that the pay increases are due to the hiring of more specialized workers, including those who focus on the technical side of the MTA such as transponder technology and weather monitoring.
