Louisiana school system employee denies committing payroll fraud

A former school employee from Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, recently pleaded not guilty to charges of obstruction of justice, first degree injuring public record, theft, malfeasance in office and public payroll fraud after being accused of embezzlement last year, according to the Lafayette Advertiser.

Carol Thomas was arrested after a routine audit identified financial irregularities in an after school program that she headed.

Following the audit, the school system filed a report with the Lafayette Police Department, which conducted a subsequent investigation and found that more than $50,000 had been embezzled between January of 2007 and November of 2009. Thomas allegedly encouraged her employees to alter and destroy documents in order to disguise the misappropriation of funds.

As a result of the investigation, Thomas was placed on leave with pay for seven months before she was fired for being "wilfully neglectful of duty," according to the news source.

Elsewhere in Louisiana, a Harahan policewoman recently pleaded guilty to collecting more than $20,000 in false overtime, according to the Times-Picayune. Carol Ney, who even reported working overtime during a week that she was on vacation, faces up to a decade in prison, three years of probation and a maximum fine of $250,000.
