Following an investigation by the United States Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division, Final Touch Laundries was found in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). To resolve the violations, the company has agreed to pay $103,904 in back wages to 64 employes who did not receive overtime.
"All workers who put in an honest day’s work are entitled to an honest day's pay," said Priscilla Garcia, director of the Wage and Hour Division's West Covina District Office, in a recent press release. "Low-wage workers, such as those employed at garment shops throughout Southern California, are particularly vulnerable."
The Wage and Hour Division regularly cracks down on industries that employ low-wage workers and have demonstrated violations in the past, such as construction companies, restaurants and car washes. When an employer is investigated, the Wage and Hour Division will ensure the company is upholding recordkeeping standards, paying employees at least minimum wage for all of their time and attendance and issuing time-and-a-half if they worked more than 40 hours during a single pay period.
If employers are not meeting these standards, they can implement a new timekeeping system that will calculate wages accurately and reduce the chances of a violation.
