The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power doled out more than $77 million in overtime payments and bonuses to employees in the first six months of 2013, according to a new report. City Controller Ron Galperin said DWP employees were paid an average 20.8 percent greater base salary than city workers in other department, making them some of the highest paid workers in the city before accounting for extra payments.
Galperin went on to say around 86 percent of DWP workers were compensated beyond their base salary through bonuses and overtime payments for extra time and attendance accrued since January. According to the report, which was made public by the city controller to improve transparency, police and fire department employees earned 9.2 percent in overtime and bonus payments.
A spokesperson for the controller's office said the rate of overtime payments for DWP workers could cost the city millions more before the end of the year.
"If these extra earnings are paid out at the same rate in the second half of 2013, the projected cost for the year could be expected to exceed $155 million - or nearly $15,816 in average extra compensation for each DWP employee," the spokesperson said.
