A Los Angeles garment maker has been cited for wage and labor violations. The manager and owner of 5 Plus 2, Yeong Sil Kim, reportedly moved the location of the business and changed the name of the organization to avoid previous violation citations. California Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su issued the violations to the owner for paying 19 employees below minimum wage and not compensating employees for overtime. The owner failed to give employees proper wages for their time and attendance and is now being ordered to pay $282,582 in damages.
Kim was under investigation by the Labor Commissioner two years prior at a business called Bultina for violating labor laws and was ordered to hand over $26,750 for not following the Labor Code. The citations were not addressed and fines remained unpaid, and Kim moved the business and changed owners shortly afterwards.
Another investigation into 5 Plus 2 revealed that employees were still working for a person named Yeong Sil Kim for an organization named Bultina Fashion. There was no employee tracking system at the company, as all workers were paid in cash.
The owner did not pay fines after the second investigation and did not attend the hearing set for the citations. The penalties subsequently increased and garments made at the business were confiscated.
