The chief financial officer of Charlotte, North Carolina-based Harris Land Company was recently charged with embezzlement, WBTV reports.
John Edward Dee, who managed the company's payroll, embezzled more than $90,000 by writing unauthorized checks as payable to other people, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The payroll fraud was discovered during a company audit conducted in February.
The audit found that Dee had been stealing funds from Harris Land for two years, during which he bought a $500,000 house in Charlotte, as well as another piece of property.
Elsewhere in North Carolina, a Lawndale convenience store owner recently pleaded guilty to embezzling $8,600 in North Carolina sales tax and nearly $16,000 in Cleveland County sales tax over a period of six years, according to the Shelby Star. She was sentenced to a minimum of 13 months in jail and 50 hours of community service, and was ordered to pay $25,000 in reparations and a $500 fine.
