A New Orleans police officer was recently arrested after an investigation by the city's police department uncovered his scheme of writing false tickets in order to collect overtime pay, according to The Times-Picayune.
Glenn Gross' overtime was funded by a grant intended to reward officers who enforce the state's seat-belt laws. By writing a total of 215 tickets to fictitious motorists over the past three months, Gross committed time and attendance fraud, and was consequently charged with 215 counts of injuring public records and one count of malfeasance in office.
According to Superintendent Ronal Serpas, it is still unclear whether Gross operated the scheme alone or acted in conjunction with others. The ongoing internal investigation has yet to turn up any cohorts, but the records of several officers and a supervisor are currently being looked into.
Earlier this year, a police officer in Harahan, a suburb of New Orleans, pleaded guilty to misrepresenting her employee attendance in order to claim more than $20,000 in federally subsidized overtime, according to the news source. Carol Ney was recently ordered to pay restitution and serve two years of probation.
