The Des Plaines Police Department suspended 13 of its officers today after determining that the group had inflated their reports of DUI arrests in order to obtain overtime pay, according to the Chicago Tribune. This payment came from a federally funded grant that was intended to combat drunk driving and seatbelt violations, but the department's recent internal investigations discovered that some of the recorded arrests misrepresented employee attendance because they were not actually performed on grant-funded time.
As reported by the Daily Herald, The Illinois Department of Transportation cut off the $116,190 traffic enforcement grant when the overtime scheme was first suspected by city leaders last March. The police commander in charge of managing the grant, Timothy Veit, signed off on all overtime reports submitted to IDOT and has since been charged with one felony count of making false statements.
The other offenders' repercussions are no cake walk, either. "When we began this investigation, we said we would be aggressive, thorough and follow the facts," said Police Chief William Kushner. The 13 officers' suspensions range from 7 to 60 days, and some have to fork over between $184 and $787, according to the Tribune.
