Hospital management, staff take furloughs, lose vacation to keep operations normal

Top-level staff at a Wyoming hospital are taking furlough days and all hospital employees are foregoing earned vacation time to keep services functioning at 100 percent.

The loss of benefits is due to a lower-than-expected number of patients using hospital services, according to local newspaper The Casper Star-Tribune. A statement from the hospital said that patient admissions were down across the country and noted confusion due to changes in Medicare reimbursements. It pointed out that other hospitals have had to cut benefits like vacation time and lay off employees.

The hospital's executive management is taking the most furlough time, with 16 top employees taking two weeks of unpaid leave. The reductions will stop the hospital from cutting services.

Budget problems are also affecting a hospital in Connecticut. The facility in the southeast portion of the state had an $8 million deficit in its most recent financial year, according to The Bulletin, a Norwich-based newspaper. The hospital has instituted a hiring freeze and furlough days for employees.

Businesses dealing with slow or busy periods need accurate and adaptable employee management software to keep track of issues ranging from furlough days to unexpected overtime.
