Hospitals nationwide may soon be increasing their
employee recruiting efforts after a report showed hiring stalled during January. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 700 hospital jobs were added in the first month of the year, which was just a small percentage of the 10,600 healthcare industry jobs created during the month.
The larger figure represents a significant decrease from the monthly rates seen in 2010. BLS figures show that the healthcare industry grew at a monthly rate of approximately 22,000 jobs last year. However, employee recruiting has remained strong in ambulatory services, where 8,000 jobs were added last month.
Overall figures were vastly different between December and January. In the previous month, there were 35,700 new positions added to industry payrolls, including 8,000 hospital jobs and 20,600 ambulatory service jobs.
Currently, there were more than 13.9 million people employed in the healthcare industry during January, with 4.7 million employed in hospitals, 6 million in ambulatory services and 2.3 million in physicians offices, BLS data shows.
