Hemet Market owners looking at charges for obstructing justice with the DOL

Co-owners of a Hemet market grocer, brothers Jafar and Jalal Rahman, failed to pay back pay and fines for overtime violations. They failed to compensate more than a dozen employees correctly for their time and attendance and originally owed 13 of their employees $447,155 in back pay. Further investigation revealed that the two brothers also obstructed the investigation. Jafar Rahman has been arrested, while his brother remains at large.

According to the Banning-Beaumont Patch, the co-owners blocked the investigation into their overtime violations by reporting inaccurate information to officials and trying to cover up unlawful procedures.

The 2008 investigation by the Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division initially resulted in a request that the two pay their employees their earned wages, but a more in depth look at their organization showed that additional illegal activity was going on. The Rahman brothers lied to employees about the DOL investigation and had them sign a document that said they had been given their proper back pay, despite not having received proper compensation.

The two owners face federal charges for disregarding back pay orders, obstructing justice, threatening employees and trying to pay them off to cover up the scandal.
