A former sales representative employed by discount website Groupon recently filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging that she and nearly 1,000 of her colleagues were not paid at a time-and-a-half rate for overtime employee attendance until earlier this year. Following this, the company reportedly began compensating them at levels that were below legal limits.
Ranita Dailey, the lead plaintiff, filed the suit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois last month, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Details are yet to come to light about why the company failed to pay overtime to its employees between the month it was founded - November 2008 - and March of this year. Reuters proposes that this was caused by a misinterpretation of overtime exemptions for commissioned employees.
A Groupon spokesman quoted by The Wall Street Journal said he was legally obligated not to go into detail about the suit beyond saying that the company believes it to be "without merit" and will defend itself accordingly.
