Employee absenteeism takes a toll on every facet of business, from productivity to attitudes and the monetary bottomline. However, there are numerous ways companies are tackling the problem.
While incentive programs may appear one obvious way to get employees into the office, programs that promote employee health and fitness may not only get them to their desk but also make them more productive.
One company, BT, was inspired to launch a company-wide health and fitness program that received nearly 16,000 sign-ups for the 16-week program after marking a litany of deaths - 26 from heart-related illness - the previous financial year, the website Bristol 24-7 reports.
Elements of the program included a diet and exercise plan as well as a pedometer to mark how much each participant walks during the day and friendly inter-office competitions, the source notes. Not only did the program help reduce mortality rates, but it also coincided with a drop in employee absences.
Even small companies can implement healthy lifestyle programs. If your business doesn't have the funds or ability to access gym facilities, try putting together sports teams or organizing lunchtime walks.
