Firefighters in Richmond County, Georgia, are voicing their concerns about late overtime payments for employee attendance exceeding standard workweek allowances, according to WRDW-TV. The supervisors say this delay is due to a payroll processing glitch at the start of the new year. Because the department has to turn in time sheets before the end of the calendar year, which can fall in the middle of a pay period, the documents do not necessarily reflect and employees' extra time and attendance.
This has caused payment delays of a few weeks for some officers, while others are still waiting for wages dating back to November 16, the news provider adds.
The wife of one firefighter told the media outlet that "when he found out it wasn't on his paycheck, they said to wait and see if it was on the next paycheck, and then we did, and it's still not there ... my husband works overtime because we need the money."
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that employers pay their non-exempt employees at least minimum wage for all of their time and attendance in addition to premium wages for overtime. Firefighters and other first responders are included in this group.
